The pursuit of perfection is a lifelong quest that has no end. Thinking about who Tsunetomo was can arguably make the book more interesting — it’s his romanticized, idyllic vision of what samurai are or were supposed to be. Hagakufe found this a very worthwhile version, though it would probably better to purchase the English original translation, which has the same layout.
Its influence has been felt throughout the world and yet its existence is scarcely known to many Westerners. Written in a time of peace by Tsuramoto Tashiro who compiled these commentaries from his conversations with Tsunetomo from to ; Yamamoto Tsunetomo a samurai whom was forbidden to perform junshi, a retainer’s ritual suicide after his master died, by an edict of the Tokugawa Shogunate combined with his master’s disapproval of the tradition.
Samurai’s have been called warrior philosphers over the ages for the sometimes irrational reasoning of honor and service to their master, or at least to western understanding. One paragraph is a about how to wear your awesome samurai hat, and the pht is about the proper way to decapitate someone.

The most memorable aspect of the book is the fact that so many rules ended with ‘the disgraced samurai is then supposed to commit seppuku – ritual suicide. It is not particularly difficult. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you will still get the same soaking. This book was scribed by a younger samurai who sat basically at the deathbed of the samurai Yamamoto Tsunetomo.

Sections end with “it is said” there is very few first hand accounts, as the author spent most of his life looking after his master and then hid himself way from the world and smothered his mind in thoughts of death and nostalgia. There is much knowledge to be found here from how to conduct yourself while in public view, and perspective on self-discipline.

And although I understand the book’s historical context, I found its few anecdotes and thoughts about women very annoying. The writing is remarkably fresh for so old a piece, and one is greatful for the work done by the translator in making it so.
