Chasteen is an engaging writer and makes the history interesting, but in textbook Quick notes: History is more than a recounting of the actions of great men, though credit is due to the author for including brief passages on women and also dipping his toes into cultural waters with discussions of Latin American novelists and poets, though a multitude of other cultural practices are ignored.

Latin American Voices Second Edition. All the kids are reading this one. Used this as a text book 10 years ago. I highly recommend to anyone who wants a succinct history of Latin America and Latin American ideologies. The book, while bloor in organization, is broken up thematically, each “theme” supported by events across Chasteeen America.

Low-brow SJWs will probably find this book deep. This book says “concise” in the title and so I feel wrong for faulting it.
The only vhasteen I have is that much of the book focuses on Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Brazil to be clear, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, and Venezuela do receive some attentionwhile Central America El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala is really only mentioned in the last chapters of the book. Sources and Interpretations Latin American Silhouettes. Open Veins of Latin America: When I team-taught the subject two years ago, we used the second edition, and I liked it then. The progression and condensed explanation of the hallmarks are simple, yet comprehensive enough to give anyone a real perspective above the average person. But this is a worthy and useful venture none-the-less, providing a great jumping off point for the uninitiated.

It’s written to be read and understood easily, but Chasteen glosses over a lot of key event. The second is swings between conservative and modernizing forces.
I mostly enjoyed it, but I was turned off by the sudden blopd in direction hcasteen the last chapter where the author delved a bit on environmental pollution in Latin America in a way that felt entirely one-sided. If you’re looking for a concise history of Latin America, written in an accessible and engaging style, look no further. This is exactly what I wanted, a basic framework history of Latin America. Latin America is a fascinating region, and Chasteen tells its story well. Very helpful source for papers though.
