Should be more, given the content… but it flies past us too fast for us to really care. The decision to begin shortly before the moment of initial colonisation rather than some years later allows a hugely powerful dynamic of discovery, settlement, and reconstruction as many of the colonists are scarred war veterans ; and indeed perhaps a third of the novel is devoted to this exploration of settlement.

This book is so deliciously complex and well thought out. I might have rated it higher, but it is hard to tell.

D I find Anne’s storytelling masterful, in a short sentence or two she can describe a character which you immediately warm to or despise depending on her intention. I thought it dragonsdadn disgusting, and although I’d heard mccavfrey things about the Pern books and was excited to read them, I will not be finishing annr one or reading the others.

I was disappointed in how many great characters got killed off willy-nilly, often so abruptly whacked and forgotten that it made my head spin. However, if any reader is wondering how McCaffrey could have been so acclaimed by genre critics in her day… well, OK, mostly the answer, to be honest, is low standards and not having much else to pick from.

It is in this book that I found a certain contentment with science fiction, though it was never a genre I was particularly interested in, while it filled my vast appetite for all things dragon. McCaffrey could present this as a terrible thing, or even just as inherently problematic.

Seemed way too easy. Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. Maybe there was too much going on that it was distracting.

Now sure, you can argue that this is an entirely fucked up relationship and the novel knows it — this is certainly not meant to be a perfect partnership even though it is meant to be an intensely romantic one.
